Bartonella: an emerging human infection
Bartonella henselae (Cat Scratch Fever), Bartonella quintana (Trench Fever) and Bartonella bacilliformis are known to cause infection in domestic and farm animals in Australia. We are also seeing Bartonella in humans who also carry Borrelia infections and it is regarded as an emerging infectious disease. One of the world's Bartonella experts Professor Ed Breitschwerd suggests there are approximately 20 species of Bartonella associated with animal or human bacteremic infections.
THE MANY PRESENTATIONS OF LYME DISEASE (BORRELIOSIS)
Lyme Disease imitates other conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia, Lupus, Sjogrens, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Alzheimer’s Disease. Studies have shown Borrelia results in auto-immune presentations like Lupus, MS and RA. Clinically, I have evidence of patients who have been treated for 10 or more years with plaquenil, prednisone or methotrexate and they have positive Borrelia PCR results (this means the DNA sequence of Borrelia has been found in their serum).
Lyme Disease (Borrelia) in Australia
A common misunderstanding is that to have Borreliosis or Lyme Disease, you need to have been bitten by a tick and have a characteristic bull's eye rash at the site of the tick bite. Many patients have no memory of a tick bite and in Australia it is also uncommon to see a bull’s eye rash.
